Exalted Ruler’s Report – October 2020
We live in interesting times. Still.
As I write, we are weathering a second stay at home order. Hopefully, by the time you read this, we’ll be on our way to opening the Lodge and Club once again.
The fluctuations and uncertainties that mark the pandemic wear on us all, but we must remain focused and vigilant. We will get through
these tough times if we watch out for each other, especially the most vulnerable among us.
In a recent “Island Voices” article in the Star Advertiser, our Lecturing Knight Calvin Hara, who has thirty years of long-term care administrative experience, reminds us that our kupuna are vulnerable to a variety of COVID complications due to depression, Alzheimer’s disease, and other dementias. Their care, Calvin
says, must “needs to be addressed collectively.”
Doctors, nurses, social workers and senior-care workers are on the front lines, but we all have a part to play in keeping our kupuna safe by being “servant leaders.” As we come out of this stay at home order, let us continue to abide by the spirit of the order, doing those things that will keep us and our families, friends, and kupuna safe. Continue to practice what Calvin calls “the three Ws—wash your hands, watch your distance, and wear your mask.”
We have heard the crisis called a marathon, but as Calvin says, we don’t yet know when we’ll reach the finish line. Until that time, please stay safe and let’s continue
to practice the brotherly love that we’ve pledged to each other.
Fraternally yours,
Russ Motter,
