Your National Veterans Service (NVS) committee, chair and members will be out and about at the following events:
September 11th will see the chair at a Patriot Day event at Punchbowl representing Elks and Veterans of Foreign Wars. It is always a solemn event as we memorialize the September 11, 2001 attacks.
Please attend the Lodge meeting on September 11th as the guest speaker will be our NVS chair talking about the 9/11 attack, what the NVS committee has done and what it wants to do in the near future. I will try to make this a talk story that will be worth your time.
September 15th is an entirely new event– ‘POWs and Hell Ships’ at Punchbowl, a memorial to four hundred American POWs who drowned aboard ships bound for Japan that were attacked and sunk. September 26th is the monthly visit to the CLC at Tripler Hospital for Bingo. We have five or more volunteers for that visit to talk story, pass out prizes and just give of themselves – the best gift ever. These visits are never taken for granted.
September 30th is Gold Star Family Day for those who have lost a family service member. I’m always cognizant of the burden these folks carry and am honored to be part of this event.
By the time you read this edition of the Aloha Elk, we will have completed the following projects:
U.S.S. Cheyenne ‘half way’ goodie bags. Mahalo for the donations of chapstick, beef jerky, assorted nuts, and Mio water. For those who donated cash, buying the Mio water at the NEX was way less expensive than
purchasing it at our grocery stores. Our goal was 125 sets of these items. We did extremely well and the COB– Chief of Boat– passed the items out at the mid-point of their patrol. If you still don’t know what Mio water is, ask me at the September 11th lodge meeting.
UH v Navy Football at Aloha Stadium. It was another great collaboration with the Wounded Warrior Ohana as we joined over eighty young veterans at the game. A few Elks, some VFW members, and the Student Veterans of America joined us.
As always, you can find me at the Lodge, the first Saturday of each month. Look for the folks in the red or blue shirts from 0830 to 1000. Have a project, idea, want to volunteer?
