Every December I can look across Waialae Iki Park from my house and watch the runners compete in the Honolulu Marathon. It’s always amazing to see so many make the 26 mile run from downtown, out to Hawaii Kai, and back to Kapiolani Park. I feel our Lodge somewhat resembles the marathon.
The renovations that began in October have, like the runners, reached Hawaii Kai, the half- way point, and are now in the home stretch. With the recent Lodge approval to complete Phase II of the renovations, we are well on our way to the finish line come the end of April. A big mahalo goes out to the Board of Directors, the Members Renovation Advisory Group, the architect and the contractor in reaching our goal. There is no doubt we will finish in first place.
The biggest mahalo, however, goes out to you, the members. Your patience, under- standing and support and believing in us has allowed us to reach this milestone. Who could have believed our Lodge could get any better? Well it’s about to! Like you, I look forward to seeing the finished product. How fortunate we are to be the gem of Elkdom!
In January, we were privileged to host our Grand Exalted Ruler, Malcolm McPherson Jr., and First Lady Pat. DDGER Keith Williams planned a superb dinner in their honor which was attended by about 80 members from all five Hawaii Lodges. As this year comes to a close, it is not too late to become a recurring donor to the Major Project or the Elks National Foundation. Just go to the websites below and pledge $5 (or more) per month for these great charities.

Although the food and beverage service may be limited during the final phase of the ren- ovations, the Lodge and Club will be open. The bar will be open and relocated within the club area or upstairs as construction dictates. Join us for super bowl Sunday. There will be a special Valentines dinner and don’t forget St. Patrick’s Day on March 17th. Pass the word! Please come down and support the club during this exciting time.
Finally, don’t forget about officer nominations and elections this month. If you are inter- ested in getting more involved you might consider running for a chair officer or the Board of Trustees. Nominations will be held the first meeting in February (Tuesday, February 13th) and elections will be held the second meeting in February (Tuesday, February 27th). I hope to see you at the Lodge meeting.
