I am honored and humbled to be serving as your Exalted Ruler for this Elks year. The journey has been special, be- ing elected as a Trustee 4 years ago, but without the guidance of past and present officers; I would not be an officer today!
This year, like no other since our inception, is special. We are on the verge of completing the most comprehensive renovation of our 117 years of existence. Past and present lodge officers should be commended in remaining committed to the cause as completion nears.
We welcome Debbie Olson and Russell Motter as our Lecturing and Loyal Knights. Together they will lead our efforts in chairing the Fraternal and Activities Committees. Loyal Knight Guy Larson Hicks will chair our charity efforts for ENF and Major Projects. Our House Committee will be chaired by John Carroll – the House Committee will be very active this year as reopening our club will be their top priority from menu items to entertainment venues.
This year Grand Lodge Statutes affords us the opportunity to review our by-laws which govern how we operate our Lodge. Our by- laws committee is comprised of past officers with extensive experiences in our history, finances, and governance.
Over the years, Exalted Rulers have faced the daunting task of identifying incentives to increase membership attendance at lodge meetings. I have witnessed a relaxing of the dress code, shortened rituals, and scheduling changes. Beginning with our April lodge
meeting, community organizations will be invited to give a brief talk story session to our members. These sessions will enhance our efforts in identifying community based needs and collaborations.
Honolulu Police Department’s Community Policing Team is scheduled for April 10th and the Domestic Violence Action Center on May 8th. Please take this opportunity to attend a lodge meeting and keep abreast of how our Lodge can make an impact in our community. Lastly, we have an ambitious agenda for this Elks year.
Exciting things are happening with our new fitness center, kitchen, dining and lounge areas, but let’s not lose focus of why we are Elks – To inculcate the principles of Charity, Justice, Brotherly Love, and Fidelity!
