I want to thank you for allowing me to serve as your Exalted Ruler for a second time and placing your trust and confidence in me to lead us forward for 2017-18. It is certainly an honor and a privilege. My theme has not changed: “Elks Working Together, Making a Difference”. It will take all of us working together to raise us to new heights. I was most impressed with the voter turnout. There were approximately 250 members that came out to vote. In my 27 years as a member, I do not recall that many people attending a Lodge meeting. I was encouraged to see so many members nominated for the various positions. For those who voted for me and to the others who were elected I say thank you and congratulations. I especially want to thank all of those who were nominated and stepped forward to run for office, but not elected. I encourage all of you to stay active and stay involved. Your input and support are critical. For those who voted for another candidate, I hope we can gain your trust and support as we move forward. I look forward to working with the other Chair officers: Byron Apo—Leading Knight, Guy Larson Hicks—Loyal Knight and Bobbe Joy Fernandez—Lecturing Knight. Along with these leaders, and all the officers, we are here to serve you, the members.
As I said in my nominating speech, I want to bring back the Aloha that Honolulu Lodge 616 is so well known for. I will ask the House Committee to review the 12 visit limit per year for visiting members and to enforce the by-law as it was intended. I will ask the House Committee to work with management and not micromanage them. I will encourage our Committees to actively recruit volunteers in helping with the good work we do. Check out the Aloha Elk for the list of committees. If you have an interest in serving, please contact me by leaving a message with the front desk. I have appointed a Chairperson to most of the committees, but I am still looking for an Auditing and Accounting Chair and Youth Activities Chair. If any of you have an interest or knowledge in these areas, please come forward.
The most common question I am asked is “Who is on the House Committee?”. I am pleased to announce the following members have accepted: John Carroll—Chair, Fred Martinez, Phyllis Horner, Michele Bray and Howard Tocman. I feel this is a very solid team with several having Food and Beverage experience. The House Committee, under the leadership of John Carroll, will ensure us of a successful club and meet the challenges that await us during our upcoming renovations. Member support, cooperation and patience will be essential as we meet these challenges.
I hope to see more members attend meetings and have a say and a vote. We need to be attentive to the needs of the members and at the same time work within the statutes and by-laws of our organization. I will work with our officers and the Secretary to keep meetings as brief as possible, but still ensure that we conduct necessary business.
New business will be limited only to what is essential on initiation nights. The dress code for members will
once again be relaxed. Walking shorts and a collared shirt, shoes or sandals will be acceptable attire for members attending the meeting. There are many components to a successful and productive Lodge year, but “Elks Working Together—Making a Difference” will be the key to that success. I welcome the challenges ahead and look
forward to working with all of you in keeping Honolulu Lodge the best Lodge in Elkdom.
Mahalo, E.R. Arthur Bud Lushby
