Aloha from the Lodge’s National Veterans Committee.
Flag Day will be held on Saturday, 16 June from 0900 – 1100 at the Lodge. This is an Elk’s ritual event that we share with the com- munity. Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts will be participating and numerous Veterans will join us from Post 8616 along with friends, family and, hopefully, lots of Elk members. If you at- tended last year, you know the Cub Scouts stole the show. Come and see if this happens again.
Loyalty Day was begun during the days of President Eisenhower as a counter to the Soviet Union’s May Day Parade. Our Loyalty Day project of installing classroom flags is pau. Working with a short lead time, the flags were installed, and VFW ‘Pledge of Allegiance’ cards and Buddy Poppies were distributed to every keiki and staff member at Prince Kuhio School. Collaborating with the VVFW, Post 8616 makes our funds go further and have more impact.
Memorial Day is pau and I hope you enjoyed the tribute to the World War I veterans of Hawaii at the Waikiki Natatorium on 27 May 2018. The Convention for the state VFW will see your NVS chair attending from 21 – 23 June.
It provides an opportunity to ‘talk story’ and see where we can assist each other in projects for the year. We will also meet with the Marine Corps League, the Vietnam Veterans of America, the Student Veterans Association and the Wounded Warrior Ohana to collaborate on other events.
Fourth of July at the Lodge will see a new event. Any keiki age 12 and under who can recite the Pledge of Allegiance from memo- ry at our NVS table will receive a cold treat. There is one treat per keiki and a limited number of treats. Further details in the July, Aloha Elk. Start practicing with your keiki now.
As always, if you want to meet and talk story, I’m at the Lodge on Saturday, 2 June and 7 July from 0830 – 1100 with VFW Post 8616. Look for the group in their red and/or blue shirts. Or drop me a note at lockwood0849@ gmail.com.
For those who have volunteered for these upcoming events, mahalo. I will be in touch soon.by
