In the doldrums of August, your Veterans Committee is gearing up for numerous upcoming events. September 1st is football–UH v Navy at Aloha Stadium. We are collaborating with the Wounded Warrior Ohana, led by a Honolulu Elk. I’d love to have a bus load of Elks to enjoy the game with these veterans. Want to attend? I need to know by 22 August, which is a firm deadline. Email me at email@example.com and I’ll give you the details.
In keeping with the Exalted Ruler’s guest speaker program, I will be speaking about the Veterans Committee at the 11 September Lodge meeting, which is also Patriot Day. Please attend, as I’d like to share with everyone what we have done, what we are doing, and what we plan for the future.
We plan to see numerous veterans and their families as the year flies by, as we will be offering workshops for veterans and their families who are suffering from PTSD. Grants are still being written and details are being worked out as we work to assist our community members. Planning is nearly finalized for the 100th anniversary of the end of World War I. Once known as Armistice Day, since 1954 we have celebrated all veterans on Veterans Day. Join us at the Waikiki Natatorium for a huge celebration. The Lodge will also celebrate Veterans Day. We have numerous members who had relatives involved in “the war to end all wars” and perhaps you will hear a story or two.
Your NVS chair will be traveling in October and November, so all of the above need lots of attention and volunteers. The best thing we can give veterans is our time. Don’t be a stranger. You will find me at the Lodge on 4 August and 1 September at the VFW Post 8616 meeting. Look for the folks in the red or blue shirts 0830 – 1000. FYI, Post 8616 is the “Outstanding Community Service Post 2017 – 2018” for the state of Hawaii.
Aloha for this month. Ron Lockwoodby
